How long does a helmet last? If you like, you can wear it for as long as you want. But what about hard hats used in the workplace? In an oilfield operation area, if a helmet is damaged or has been in use for more than two and a half years, it must be replaced. To date, the operating area has recovered 162 failed helmets that no longer meet safety standards.
"Safety helmets and other protective equipment must not be 'stitched' together for another three years. They can't just be 'not bad'—they need to be in perfect condition," said the deputy director of operations. "These items are essential for worker safety, and we cannot take any chances."
The operating area was established over three years ago, and hundreds of helmets were distributed across different positions. However, the service life of each helmet, including its performance and technology, must meet strict standards to ensure effective protection. According to the "Helmet Production and Use Management Practices," helmets must be scrapped after two and a half years from the manufacturing date. Additionally, any helmet that has suffered severe impact, damage, or deformation must also be discarded immediately.
To address this, the operating area launched a comprehensive review of helmet usage. Helmets that have exceeded their service life, show no gap between the shell and liner, or are damaged or deformed are identified and managed collectively by personnel at the material management station.
To ensure nothing is missed during the recovery process, each production unit assigns a dedicated person to collect unqualified helmets at fixed locations. Team leaders are responsible for checking the quality of each helmet and verifying the manufacturing date, then handing over any non-compliant helmets to the designated recovery site.
So far, all 162 end-of-life helmets have been moved to the yard for proper disposal. The operating area also emphasizes that every unit must carefully inspect helmets and promptly report any failed ones to the safety and environmental protection department for recovery. Any employee found using substandard helmets on-site will face disciplinary action. Contractors are also required to follow uniform standards and ensure proper use and management of safety helmets on the production floor.
The operating area plans to improve the helmet management system by maintaining a detailed ledger that records the production date, effective use period, distribution, and usage information of each helmet. Based on this record and actual needs, they will manage the purchase, release, use, and scrapping of helmets in a standardized and unified manner.
