While the outer packaging of these fake masks may look identical to genuine products, the internal materials, embossing quality, and nose clip design reveal significant differences. Last week, the Hangzhou City Industrial and Commercial Sub-bureau, in collaboration with rights protectors from mask manufacturers, conducted a special law enforcement operation aimed at safeguarding well-known Hangzhou trademarks. As part of this effort, they seized a large number of counterfeit "North Korea" masks, which had been illegally produced and distributed in the market.
According to Mr. Hu, a representative from a mask manufacturer responsible for quality control, the company has recently received numerous complaints about the quality of masks sold online and in local stores. Upon testing samples provided by customers, the factory confirmed that these were low-quality counterfeits. Specifically, the "North Korea" 9000 professional dust mask and the 2002 N-nitroso compound dust mask were identified as being particularly problematic. It was later confirmed that these fake masks had already entered the Hangzhou market.
Mr. Hu explained that for the average consumer, distinguishing between real and fake masks is extremely difficult at first glance. However, using counterfeit dust-proof or particulate masks can be dangerous. Not only do they fail to provide adequate protection, but the inferior materials used in these fakes may also irritate the skin or cause other health issues.

At one of the stalls, hundreds of "Chaomei" brand masks were found for sale. Officers then inspected the nearby warehouse and discovered a large stock of similar masks. These items were immediately seized as part of the investigation.
Upon comparing the fake and real masks, clear differences became apparent. Genuine masks feature high-quality ultrasonic embossing, smooth edges, and nose clips that meet national standards—typically measuring 7 cm in length. In contrast, counterfeit masks often have uneven embossing, weaker seals, and shorter nose clips. Additionally, real masks use specialized meltblown non-woven filter material sterilized with ethylene oxide, while fake versions are made from cheaper, easily torn materials without proper sterilization.
Law enforcement officials requested the sales records from the store operators and temporarily suspended the suspected counterfeit masks. After an initial review, it was determined that over 4,000 masks were involved in the case, with an estimated value of RMB 10,000.
The Hangzhou Industrial and Commercial Bureau emphasized that due to the potential risk of these counterfeit masks entering the market through various channels, further inspections will be carried out on other businesses in the area.
