Each type of fastener comes with specific specifications, dimensions, tolerances, weights, performance criteria, surface conditions, marking methods, and packaging requirements, all of which are regulated by national and industry standards. These include systems like the English, German, and American standards. The machinery industry is one of the largest consumers of fasteners. However, due to a late recognition of the importance of basic mechanical components, China has historically lacked sufficient investment, leading to a weak foundation in this sector. As the level of mainframe technology improves, the limitations of basic mechanical components have become increasingly evident.
In recent years, the government has provided some support through technology introduction, industrial upgrades, and research and development. Nevertheless, there remains a significant gap compared to domestic demand and foreign standards. This is reflected in the limited variety of products, unstable quality, high early failure rates, and poor reliability. Fasteners, being essential basic components in the machinery industry, require continuous improvement to meet higher demands. Luo Baihui notes that while common standard fasteners are oversupplied domestically, high-end types—such as those made from titanium-plastic composites, high-temperature resistant materials, or with special shapes—are still in short supply and rely heavily on imports. The National Machinery Bureau has classified "common standard fasteners" as restricted development items, while "high-strength shaped fasteners" are encouraged for development.
With the advancement of China’s industrialization and technological progress, the use of high-strength fasteners is increasing. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the number of construction machinery products like loaders, excavators, and road rollers is expected to reach 6 million units, with annual sales around 50,000 units. Based on this, the annual demand for high-strength fasteners is estimated at 20,000 to 30,000 tons. Fasteners, as key basic components, are not only vital to China’s equipment manufacturing industry but also form a critical foundation across all sectors of the national economy.
While maintaining cost advantages, the industry must focus on new strengths such as technological innovation, improved quality, and better product value to achieve sustainable growth. By the end of 2015, the total output of the industry is expected to reach 7.5 to 8 million tons. With expanding exports, the industry will see an upward trend, with an average annual export growth rate of 8% to 10%. By 2015, the total export volume is projected to reach 30 billion yuan.
Domestic manufacturers should look ahead and take advantage of opportunities brought by major national projects such as high-speed rail, aerospace, highways, and airports. Boeing plans to add 3,400 aircraft over the next 20 years, while the National Development and Reform Commission has invested 800 billion yuan in building rail transit systems in six cities. With 36 urban rail transit projects planned, the new rail mileage is expected to reach 6,560 kilometers, creating a demand for rail fasteners worth 5.5 to 7 billion yuan. These large-scale projects will significantly boost the demand for high-end fasteners, making it possible to move beyond the "low-end" label.
