Quantum dots help solar cells cheaper

Researchers at the Moscow State University of Nuclear Energy Research Institute of Engineering Physics (MEPhI), Russia, have developed a new technology for manufacturing quantum dot materials that will help develop cheap solar cells that absorb broad-spectrum sunlight.

Current optoelectronic devices are silicon-based inorganic semiconductor materials that are inefficient, do not handle the entire spectrum, and are expensive.

Quantum dots, which are semiconductor crystals that are several nanometers in size, change their size and can easily control the properties of the solar cell, such as expanding the absorption spectrum. Quantum dot condensate production is done by simple, inexpensive methods, but in order to obtain high quality coatings, the production conditions and the type of organic molecules that bind the quantum dots must be carefully selected.

Russian scientists have developed techniques to replace ligands at room temperature, which helps to change the distance between quantum dots, thereby controlling the efficiency of charge energy transfer, not only for the manufacture of photovoltaic cells or light-emitting diodes, but also to create more complex The semiconductor structure is used as a semiconductor structure for manufacturing a highly sensitive new generation of sensors.

Ordinary mullite porcelain is made of aluminosilicate natural minerals as a main raw material, and is formed by a reaction sintering method in which a eucalyptus is synthesized in a sintering process or a mullite is first synthesized and then sintered. Due to the low purity of raw materials and high impurity content, in addition to Al2O3 and SiO2, the components also contain impurities such as TiO2, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, etc., so that there are a considerable amount of glass phase in the product, resulting in mechanical and thermal properties. Poor, the excellent performance of mullite ceramics at high temperatures cannot be fully utilized. Therefore, ordinary mullite ceramics in the industry can only be used as a general refractory material in the case where the temperature and high temperature strength are not high.
