Scientists develop 3D printer to print human skeleton

According to foreign media reports, in the near future, surgeons may be able to use the printing equipment to print out bones of various sizes for clinical use during surgery. This magical 3D printer has now been manufactured, and printing materials used to replace human bones are in full swing testing.

In laboratory tests, this bone substitute print material has been shown to support the growth of human bone cells, and its effectiveness has also been validated in rats and rabbits. In the coming years, better quality bone substitutes will be printed or will help surgeons perform bone damage repairs for dental clinics and even help people with osteoporosis recover their health.

Susmita Bose said: "If a doctor has a CT scan of a patient's lesioned bone, we can turn it into a CAD drawing and make a replacement skeleton based on the patient's condition." Sis is a mechanical and materials engineer from Washington State University.

Recently, 3D printing technology has rapidly emerged as a hot new industry. The number of three-dimensional products that can be printed is rapidly increasing. In order to print the bone material, Bos and her colleagues used a commercially available ProMetal 3D printer for testing. This 3D printer was originally designed to print metal parts. It sprays layers of plastic rubber on top of a layer of powder substrate and builds them layer by layer. The thickness of each layer is only half the width of a person's hair.

The main material component of this skeletal scaffold is calcium phosphate, which additionally contains silicon and zinc in order to increase its strength. After it is implanted in the human body, it can temporarily serve as a support for the bones, and in the process helps normal bone cells to grow and develop and thereby repair previous damages, and then this material can naturally dissolve in the human body.

It took scientists four years to find the right formula for this material, which involved many disciplines in chemistry, materials science, biology, and process science. This research work received US$1.5 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health. Reports on the research of this project, laboratory tests, and related papers on animal experiments have been published in the recently published issue of "Dental Materials".
