New Solar Panel Technology Receives IET's Top Engineering Award

The British Engineering Technology Society (IET), one of the world’s most prestigious engineering organizations, recently announced that Australian engineer Stuart Wenham has been awarded the IET AF Harvey Engineering Research Award for his groundbreaking work in developing high-performance, low-cost solar panels. The prize includes a generous £300,000 bonus, recognizing his significant contributions to the field of renewable energy. Professor Stuart Wenham from the University of New South Wales led a team that discovered an innovative method to enhance silicon performance by precisely controlling hydrogen atoms. Silicon, which is traditionally expensive and often of lower quality, is a critical component in solar cells. By manipulating hydrogen at the atomic level, Wenham’s team managed to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of solar panels, making them more viable for widespread use. This breakthrough technology not only set Wenham apart among global contenders but also earned him international acclaim. He expressed his deep gratitude, saying, “It’s an immense honor to have our research recognized with this prestigious award. The UNSW team has long been at the forefront of silicon solar cell development. Our recent discovery of how to control hydrogen states in silicon opens up new possibilities for commercialization. We’re already working with major manufacturers to bring this low-cost innovation to market. The funding from this award will be crucial in advancing our research and bringing real-world benefits.” Barry Brooks, President of the IET, praised Wenham’s contributions, stating, “Professor Wenham has been instrumental in advancing silicon solar cell technology globally. His pioneering work and leadership have significantly accelerated the commercialization of these technologies. This award is well-deserved and serves as an inspiration to engineers everywhere.” The AF Harvey Engineering Research Award, named after the late IET member Dr. A.F. Harvey, was established through a generous donation from Harvey before his passing. The trust fund supports outstanding research in various engineering disciplines, including medical, microwave, laser, and radar technologies. Since its inception in 2011, the award has recognized exceptional talent across the globe, offering financial support to help researchers further their work. In 2013, the IET distributed over £1 million in prizes, bonuses, and scholarships to recognize excellence in engineering and to encourage the next generation of engineers and technicians. This ongoing commitment reflects the society’s dedication to fostering innovation and supporting the future of engineering worldwide.
