In recent years, as more and more consumers have become conscious of the environmental impact of building materials, the paint industry has witnessed a surge in eco-friendly trends. This has led to the rise of "non-odorous" or "green" paints, with many companies marketing their products under this label. However, the term "non-odorous" is often used more as a sales tactic than a scientifically verified standard.
Experts in the field highlight that currently, there is no unified national regulation governing the odor levels in coatings. As a result, the concept of "non-odorous" is largely a marketing strategy employed by manufacturers. According to Song Guangsheng, director of the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Protection Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, some businesses use subtle hints or clever wordplay to exaggerate the environmental benefits of their products, sometimes even misleading consumers about their actual effectiveness.
Song further explained that true "non-odorous" coatings are usually functional paints designed to neutralize harmful odors and toxins in the air. These coatings are generally non-toxic. However, many so-called "non-odorous" paints from smaller manufacturers do not actually possess this feature—they just have a mild smell. Most products on the market fall into two categories: one that genuinely eliminates odors through advanced emulsion technology, and another that masks the smell using perfumes or fragrances. The latter is considered a false or "pseudo-clean" option, which may still contain harmful substances.
When purchasing paint, consumers should open the product and test its smell. A truly clean-tasting product should not have a strong or pungent odor. If it does, it might be due to added fragrances or hidden harmful chemicals that can negatively affect health and the environment.
Ren Changqing, secretary-general of the China Building Decoration Materials Association, emphasized that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose long-term risks to human health. Although the effects may not be immediately noticeable, prolonged exposure to high VOC concentrations can lead to symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even severe conditions like convulsions or coma. He advised consumers to pay close attention to the VOC content when buying paint.
According to national regulations, interior latex paint should have a VOC content of no more than 200 g/l. However, some salespeople claim their products have "near-zero" VOC levels. Ren pointed out that internationally, the term "zero VOC" is typically applied when the content is less than 1 gram per liter or approaches zero. Therefore, any such claims should be supported by an official inspection report; otherwise, they are likely to be exaggerated.
Sun Lianying, chairman of the China Coatings Industry Association, noted that traditional coatings have long been a major source of indoor pollution. Most coatings in China still rely on organic solvents, which are harmful to both the environment and human health. In contrast, water-based paints replace these solvents with water, making them easier to clean and less polluting.
Despite the growing popularity of water-based paints, especially among high-end consumers who prioritize environmental protection, oil-based paints still dominate the market due to consumer habits and cost considerations. Sun explained that the performance of most domestic water-based paints is not yet comparable to that of oil-based ones, and their application is highly dependent on weather and environmental conditions, leading to longer construction times. As a result, water-based paints face challenges in gaining widespread acceptance.
Sun concluded that unless there is a significant improvement in product quality, water-based coatings will struggle to take a larger share of the Chinese market.
