"More and more people are choosing solid wood furniture when buying home furnishings, and its popularity is growing rapidly," said a reporter who visited several large furniture stores in the city. During a visit to local furniture stores, reporters noticed an increase in the number of solid wood furniture shops on various floors, not just at the Louvre Palace on the fifth floor of Hall A. A salesperson shared, "Many customers now specifically ask for all-solid-wood furniture, especially those with young children."

Understanding the difference between solid wood and all-solid-wood furniture

The furniture industry has long had certain unspoken rules about what qualifies as solid wood furniture. However, these standards changed after the new edition of the General Technical Conditions for Wood Furniture was implemented in 2009. This regulation clearly defines different types of wood furniture, including "solid wood furniture," "wood panel furniture," "comprehensive wood furniture," "all-solid-wood furniture," and "solid wood veneer furniture."

When we refer to "all-solid-wood furniture," it means that the entire piece is made from logs or solid wood finger joints, without any MDF or laminated materials. On the other hand, "solid wood furniture" may use solid wood boards or sawn timber, with finishes applied either directly or through solid wood veneer. According to national standards, some panels can be used in solid wood furniture, as long as they meet specific requirements.

It's important to note that if a seller claims their product is solid wood or all-solid-wood furniture, it must strictly comply with the new General Technical Conditions for Wood Furniture. Otherwise, it could be considered misleading or even fraudulent.

Price isn't everything

"The price of all-solid-wood furniture varies widely," many consumers mistakenly believe that higher prices mean better quality. However, this isn't always the case. Li Shilin explained that solid wood furniture is categorized based on the quality of the wood used. For example, traditional Chinese mahogany or European-style solid wood furniture tends to be pricier due to strict craftsmanship, material selection, and drying processes. These items often use premium wood types. Meanwhile, more affordable solid wood furniture may use softer woods like pine, resulting in a wide price range.

Additionally, store location can influence pricing. Even the same product may have different prices depending on where it’s sold. To make an informed purchase, consumers should research materials thoroughly and compare options before making a decision.
