Paint Finishing Tips:
Paint finishing involves applying paint to wooden surfaces such as wardrobes, baseboards, heating covers, and various types of doors. There are two main types of paint: transparent and opaque finishes. However, during the painting process, improper techniques can lead to common issues like uneven coverage, discoloration, or peeling. Understanding these problems will help you identify them during inspections and request necessary corrections.
Be mindful of paint film whitening.
One of the most commonly used materials in paint is nitrocellulose varnish, which is highly sensitive to humidity. In wet or rainy seasons, especially in northern regions, a semi-transparent milky white layer may appear on the painted surface due to moisture trapped in the paint. This isn’t caused by complete drying. To fix this, use an infrared lamp to gently bake the affected area, then apply a new coat of paint mixed with 10–15% butanol-based moisture-proofing agent. Ensure the workspace is well-ventilated and dry before proceeding.
Watch out for color variation and spots.
A popular technique involves mixing different types of paints. If not properly blended, this can result in uneven color when applied. The painter should mix thoroughly and apply multiple thin coats. Additionally, if the first coat is too smooth or contains oil, water vapor, or dirt, the subsequent layers may not adhere properly, causing spots. To resolve this, allow the first coat to dry completely, wipe the surface with soap to remove any oils, lightly sand it with fine-grit sandpaper, and then repaint.
Pay attention to wrinkling and peeling.
Wrinkles often occur when the paint film is not fully dry or when the coating is too thick. High viscosity or direct sunlight exposure can also contribute to this issue. To prevent it, ensure the paint has the right consistency, avoid overly thick layers, and use brushes with appropriate bristle firmness. Avoid exposing freshly painted surfaces to direct sunlight.
Peeling is a frequent problem, especially at corners where vertical and horizontal surfaces meet. It’s usually caused by over-diluting the paint or applying too much. Maintain proper brush strokes, work quickly and evenly, and remove excess paint immediately if dripping occurs. When using a spray gun, keep it between 15–25 cm from the surface. If the paint runs, wait until it dries, sand the area, and then reapply.
