Main points of wall decoration renovation of second-hand house

When renovating the walls of a second-hand home, installing a mosaic can be an effective solution. One practical approach is to fix cement board directly onto the existing painted surface before tiling. This method eliminates the need to remove the old paint, saving both time and labor while reducing construction costs and material waste.

Before nailing the cement board, it's important to prepare it properly. First, measure and mark the dimensions of the mosaic area on the cement board using a marking pen. Then, use a specialized punch tool to create small holes at the corners of the mesh pattern, which will help in securing the board. Additionally, if there are electrical outlets or switches on the wall, you must first turn off the power, remove the faceplate, and bundle the wires with insulating tape. Accurately measure the location of the outlet box and cut a corresponding hole in the cement board using a utility knife or cutter.

Once the cement board is ready, it's time to install it. Place the board against the wall and check if the edges fit tightly together. If necessary, sand down any rough edges until they align smoothly. When nailing, use steel nails along the pre-marked lines for initial fixation. Then, drill small pilot holes where the board was marked earlier. Insert plastic expansion screws into these holes and tighten them using an electric drill to ensure a secure hold.

After installation, inspect the cement board for stability. If any areas feel loose, re-nail them for better support. Use a level and a laser line detector to check that the board is perfectly aligned. Once everything looks good, apply a waterproof sealant to the joints between the boards. Mix the waterproofing agent with water in a 1:1 ratio and use a roller to apply it evenly across the surface. For areas like the living room with lower humidity, one to two coats may be sufficient. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding with tiling.
