When the bit is rotated, the maximum edge diameter of the cutting edge is the highest, and the line speed at the center drill tip is equal to zero, which is at rest. If the toughness of the drill bit substrate is insufficient, the pressure on the drill tip may cause the drill tip to chip. In order to avoid rapid wear of the cutting edge, the drill substrate is required to have a high hardness. Since the conventional drill bit is made of a single material, there is a trade-off between toughness and hardness in the selection of the drill bit. The ideal bit material should have high toughness at the drill tip and high hardness at the cutting edge. 
The newly developed HardCore drill bit (see photo) from ATI Stellram has the above two attributes. The drill is made of two different carbide grades. The core material of the drill is a fine-grained hard alloy that improves the toughness of the drill bit and the impact resistance at low speeds, preventing the drill tip from chipping. . A high hardness carbide grade is used around the peripheral portion of the core to improve the wear resistance of the peripheral cutting edge. According to the company, the service life of this two-material carbide drill is more than four times that of a single-material drill, which can cut the cutting time by half. 
The HardCore drill has a drill tip angle of 140, with a TiAlN coating and an open trough to aid chip evacuation. The product specifications are Φ3-Φ16mm and the maximum aspect ratio is 5:1 (for machining steel and cast iron). The upcoming internal cooling drills have a maximum aspect ratio of up to 8:1 (for machining stainless steel and hardened steel) for minimum lubrication (MQL) machining. The company currently offers a wide range of Hard Core drills for machining cast iron, steel and titanium alloys (hardness up to 50HRC).
