Researchers at the Non-profit Photonics Science Research Institute (ICFO) have created a new type of organic solar cell designed to maintain high efficiency while also taking into account flexibility, thinness, and almost complete transparency. ICFO said that such solar cells are particularly suitable for photovoltaic integrated buildings and there are not many restrictions. In addition to being almost transparent, it can also be applied to surfaces, and the color can also be adjusted by changing the configuration of the photonic crystal.

Researchers are currently working to improve their performance, longevity, and stability. The leader of the study (professor Jordi Martorell) stated, “We expect to achieve extremely high efficiency and transparency in the medium term to cater to the needs of devices such as monitors, tablets and smart phones”.
