Qingdao Energy has made progress in the research of alcohol production by high-temperature fermentation of brown algae

China is the largest seaweed cultivation country in the world, accounting for 72% of the world's artificial breeding. Common brown algae such as kelp, a huge biomass, the sugar content of up to 67% of dry weight, mainly algin, laminaran and mannitol. The development of large algae biomass energy has many advantages, such as high photosynthesis efficiency, rapid growth rate, and large biomass production. It does not require fresh water, does not compete with grain, can make full use of offshore marine resources, and is rich in carbohydrates and does not contain Difficult components such as lignin can reduce environmental problems such as carbon dioxide and eutrophication in the sea. Therefore, following the introduction and development of concepts such as cellulosic ethanol and microalgae oil production, the large algae biomass has become a new breakthrough point for bioenergy conversion development with its unique advantages.

The production of liquid fuel by brown algae fermentation is an important direction for the development of algae bio-energy, but there are technical barriers with complex sugar components and difficult to be transformed by known microorganisms. Wild strains have not yet found strains capable of simultaneously fermenting the main components of brown algae. The microbial resources team of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences has tapped a large number of novel thermophilic anaerobic microbial resources in recent offshore sediments. A highly efficient algae-producing strain of algae was obtained by accumulating brown algae biomass as a substrate under high temperature conditions. Representative strains of the flora were identified as the new species Defluviitalea phaphyphila. The ethanol yield of the three main components of brown algae reached 0.47 g/g-mannitol, 0.44 g/g-glucose and 0.3 g/g-alginate, respectively, close to the theoretical yield. What is more important is that this strain can ferment three different redox force substrates at the same time, which effectively balances the problem of oxidation-reduction imbalance in anaerobic fermentation of brown algae. After 72 hours of brown algae fermentation, the strain can produce 10 g/L of ethanol with an ethanol yield of up to 0.25 g/g-biomass. This ethanol production is extremely rare in thermophilic wild B fermentative strains. The above research was recently published in Biotechnology for Biofuels, and was mainly completed by the team's associate researcher Jang Shiqi. After the paper was published, it was promoted by websites such as Green Car Congress, EBSCO Information Service, and Advanced Biofuel USA. This study is of great significance to the development of the bio-transformation industry in China.
