New Zealand health agencies have banned the sale of mothballs throughout the country due to the risk of children eating. The New Zealand Minister of Health recently urged retailers to remove the product and ask the customer who purchased the product to properly handle it or return the product to the merchant.
Most of the mothballs are white and contain different concentrations of toxic substances to prevent and control moths that feed on natural fibers. The New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emphasizes that New Zealand does not approve the chemical composition of naphtha and naphthalene as an insecticide.
The Minister of Health also stressed in the statement that the higher the toxic concentration, the greater the toxicity after ingestion. If you eat these products, it will be fatal.
Although New Zealand does not report on the fate of eating mothballs, on average, two people are hospitalized every three years for eating mothballs or related products. Eighty percent of hospitalized patients are children under the age of four.
Mothballs and naphthalene are banned in Europe, but are available in Australia and are accompanied by warning signs to prevent swallowing and ingestion. The Minister of Health said that similar products were not sold in New Zealand and that the New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency needed to evaluate such products before they could be produced and exported.
