American Scientists Discover New Biomass-producing Algae

Scientists at the University of Delaware have recently confirmed that marine algal blooms of Heterophylloma can be used to make motor fuel bioethanol. The algae can survive and grow in a nitric oxide-rich flue gas environment, but toxic algae blooms can also be formed in the natural environment.

Kathryn Coyne, an associate professor of marine biology at the School of Earth, Oceans and the Environment at the University of Delaware, and her research team found that algae can produce more carbohydrates in a flue gas environment than in the air. She stated that Heterosigma akashiwo can survive in the nitric oxide gas environment, and the growth rate can be doubled, and the cell size can also exceed the normal value in the normal environment. In fact, algae cells can grow rapidly in a gas mixture of carbon dioxide and nitric oxide.

Heterosigma akashiwo spreads throughout the world, and its growth not only produces large amounts of carbohydrates, but it can be further transformed into bioethanol. Kony said that this type of algae has a special function to eliminate the harmful gas that poses a threat to the environment and human health: nitric oxide.

According to the US Toxic Substance Study, nitric oxide is a non-flammable but most toxic nitrogen oxide at room temperature. Automobile exhaust emissions, coal, oil, natural gas fuel combustion, and arc welding, electroplating, electric engraving, and even explosive blasting, all release nitrogen oxides into the air. Low concentrations of nitrogen oxides in the air can cause eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, and inhalation of high concentrations of nitrogen oxides can be lethal.

The characteristic of Heterosigma akashiwo, which grows and converts carbon monoxide in carbon monoxide, gave Kony’s research team great incentive to further investigate whether it could rely on CO2 growth in power plant flue gas without being exposed to high concentrations of NO. Nitrogen is killed.

After a year's efforts, the Coney team found that Heterosigma akashiwo not only could survive in the flue gas environment, but grew stronger. These algae no longer need other nitrogen sources in addition to nitric oxide in the flue gas. Therefore, a lot of training costs can be saved. According to Coney, "Only this alone can save up to 45% of the energy costs required to make biofuels."

Under the university plan funded by Delaware Sea Grant, the researchers will further explore how to enhance the growth of Heterosigma akashiwo. At present, they are actively exploring opportunities for cooperation with enterprises, shortening the growth of seaweed, and realizing the production of biofuels with Heterosigma akashiwo as soon as possible.

Kony said that the company’s own technological development will support the US’s national focus on carbon pollution reduction, which will not only produce biofuels, but also use algae remediation to reduce industrial exhaust pollution and improve the climate. (Wang Linlin)
