Recently, the Stanford University research team developed the world's first all-carbon solar cell. According to reports, this ultra-thin battery will not only reduce production costs, but also can be painted on the glass of buildings and car windows, and are always ready to collect energy. Although all-carbon solar cells have appeared before, their carbon materials are limited to the active layer in the middle of the battery. And the solar cells they make are really using 100% all-carbon materials, even if the electrodes are used in them.
Like the "all-carbon" solar cells previously developed by MIT, this battery developed by Stanford University is also made of carbon nanotubes and ball base balls.
Zhanan Bao, head of the R&D team, said that although the current collection efficiency of this battery is less than 1%, he believes that with the continuous innovation of materials and technology, they will soon break this figure.
The main problem facing the two universities at MIT and Stanford is that the battery can only absorb light in the near-infrared spectrum.
It is reported that Stanford's development team is currently experimenting with carbon nanomaterials to increase its energy absorption rate. This material absorbs a wider range of light, including the visible spectrum. In addition, they are still seeking ways to make a smoother carbon layer.
Although the efficiency of this battery is not very high, in view of the materials used, it will remain in normal use up to 593°C.
