Microbes can convert “clean” electrical energy into biogas

Scientists at Stanford University and Penn State University in the United States say that microbes that can convert electricity into biogas will be an important source of renewable energy.

Researchers at both universities are cultivating a community of microorganisms called "alkanoids" that have excellent capabilities in converting electrical energy into clean biogas. The scientists’ goal is to build large microbiology factories that convert clean electricity from solar, wind, and nuclear power into renewable biogas energy and other important industrial compounds.

Alfred Schumpman, a professor of chemical engineering and civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University, said: “Most of the biogas today is from natural gas. Many of the important organic molecules used in industry come from oil. Our organic approach will eliminate people’s needs. Use these fossil resources again."

Spallman said that although biogas itself is a terrible greenhouse gas and is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, microbial biogas can be safely obtained and stored, minimizing its leakage into the atmosphere.

He explained: "The entire microbial process is carbon-free. All the carbon released by the combustion process comes from the atmosphere, and all the electricity used to make biogas comes from renewable or nuclear energy. It does not contain carbon dioxide."

He added that microbes that can produce biogas can solve the major challenge of large-scale renewable energy: how to handle the excess power generated by photovoltaic power plants and wind power generation.

Spoelman said: "There is no good way to store electricity at present. However, we know that some of the alkanoids can directly produce biogas through electricity. In other words, they make the electricity metabolize into chemical energy in the form of biogas and can be stored. Understanding how this metabolic process is carried out is the focus of our research. If biogas is produced on a large scale by the production of alkanes, it will greatly change the situation.”
