"I'm really annoyed by the so-called grand modern European-style furniture. I prefer traditional Chinese furniture—it's simple, elegant, and unique!" said a young man from Beijing while browsing mahogany furniture at the Xuanming Dianju Red Sandalwood Art Museum. He was setting up a wedding room, and although his family suggested going for European-style furniture, he decided to go against the trend and create a more "quaint" and traditional atmosphere in his home. Eventually, he added a six-piece square dining set, chairs, a sofa, a red rosewood bed, and even a rosewood round chair and a Badashanren backrest chair to complete the look.
Ms. Wei, the manager of the mahogany furniture store, mentioned that around 30% of the younger customers now choose Ming-style furniture. She believes this shift reflects the rising cultural awareness among the youth and the growing confidence of China as a global power. "People are becoming more interested in their heritage," she explained. She also noted that there are different types of wenge wood—such as Myanmar and African chicken wing wood—with a price difference of up to two-thirds. It can be hard for consumers to tell them apart without proper knowledge.
According to national standards, there are 33 species of mahogany under five genera and eight categories, and prices vary significantly depending on the type. Some unscrupulous sellers even use cheaper woods to pass off as real mahogany. In recent years, many young people have started showing interest in mahogany furniture, especially those who are setting up homes after the 1980s. While it's positive that they're taking an interest, Ms. Wei advises them to be cautious. Unlike older buyers, who have spent years studying and understanding the value of such furniture, young people may lack the experience needed to spot fakes or make informed decisions.
She offered some tips for buying mahogany furniture: First, understand the price differences between materials and ask clearly about the type of wood and its origin. Second, check if the store is professional and has a clear pricing system—don’t fall for claims like "factory direct sales." Third, ensure that the invoice includes details such as the grade, material type, and origin of the furniture, as required by law.
Buying mahogany furniture isn't just about style; it's also about making smart, informed choices. With the right knowledge, young buyers can enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese furniture without falling prey to scams.
