It's currently the peak season for home renovation, and many homeowners are busy planning their updates. One of the first steps in any home improvement project is purchasing quality decoration materials. To help readers make informed choices, we spoke with Lang Zhichun, the Secretary-General of the China Interior Decoration Association's Decorative Materials Supplies Committee, who shared some expert tips on selecting the best materials.
Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles with a high gloss finish are easier to clean and less likely to show dirt. When inspecting, you can look at the surface under strong light from the side to check for bubbles or imperfections. Tapping the tile with your hand can also help—good ceramic will produce a crisp sound. A dull sound may indicate low porosity, which could lead to cracks, poor wear resistance, and higher water absorption.
Flooring
To test flooring, randomly select a few pieces and check if they fit tightly together. The surface should feel smooth and even. Examine the craftsmanship by looking for gaps or issues with the anti-deformation grooves. You can also test stain resistance by using an oily pen to write on the floor and then wiping it off. If the mark remains visible, the floor may not be resistant to stains.
Stone
Natural stone with a fine, uniform structure is generally of better quality. Stones with uneven grain or large pores may have a weaker appearance and lower durability. Due to natural geological processes, stones often have small veins or micro-cracks. These weak points are where the stone is most likely to break. High-quality stone will sound crisp when tapped, while stones with internal cracks or loose particles will produce a dull sound.
A simple way to check stone quality is to drop a small amount of ink on its back. If the ink spreads or seeps out, the stone has loose particles or internal cracks, indicating poor quality. If the ink stays in one place without spreading, the stone is likely high quality.
Wallpaper
The environmental rating of wallpaper depends on the materials used, printing process, and overall quality. If possible, burn a small sample of the wallpaper. High-quality, eco-friendly options will burn cleanly without producing strong odors or dark smoke. Poor quality paper may emit a foul smell or leave sooty residue. Additionally, while colorful wallpapers look great, it's wise to wipe them with a damp cloth to see if the color fades easily.
