Japan's cheap and durable new fuel cell come out

The research team of the Kyushu University in Japan has developed a new type of fuel cell that is cheap and durable, and looks forward to reaching a practical level after five years.

Currently favored hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity by allowing oxygen and hydrogen to react chemically. In theory, this fuel cell produces only water and heat and is a clean energy source. However, most of the existing hydrogen fuel cells require cooling, and the efficiency is relatively low.

A research team led by Fujita Tsuyoshi, an associate professor at the Kyushu University’s Graduate School of Engineering, used a high-boiling point phosphoric acid instead of water for cooling in the fuel cell, and used solid-state phosphoric acid to prevent the leakage of the phosphoric acid from causing battery performance degradation.

In addition, researchers added carbon nanotubes to the fuel cell electrode catalyst.

This type of carbon nanotube has a very high strength, which can increase the durability of the battery, reduce the amount of expensive platinum used as a catalyst by half, and reduce the price of the battery to about 70% of the existing fuel cell.
