New Achievements in the Research of Photonic Integrated Chips for Superstructure Materials

"Light" is the fastest information carrier in the world. The capture and manipulation of light has become a goal that people are pursuing. Professor Liu Hui of the School of Physics of Nanjing University, where the research group is located, combines the country's major requirements in photonics integration and the international frontier of superconstructing materials. He has pioneered nano-helix polarizers for superconducting photonic integrated chip research to regulate light polarization information. The earliest proposed magnetic resonance nano-waveguide, the transmission of optical information at the nanoscale; and the use of new technologies to prepare photonic black hole microcavity, to achieve high-efficiency photon capture and detection, making the optical signal modulation, transmission, detection three breakthroughs.

Superstructured materials are a new kind of artificial microstructure materials designed and manufactured by scientists to simulate the materials in nature. Professor Liu Hui is engaged in the research of micro-structured optoelectronic functional devices and materials. He and his team used a simple and ingenious spin-on heating process to use the surface tension of the microsphere surface in contact with the polymer film. On the photonic chip, an optical microcavity with a refractive index similar to that of the central gravitational field distribution is realized.

The results show that similar to the “vision” of the gravitational field around the black hole, there is a critical radius for this type of microcavity. When the photon propagation path passes through the area surrounded by the critical radius, photons are captured by the microcavity, and when the photon propagation path Outside the critical radius region, photons will not be captured, but the path will be curved. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory.

Professor Leonhardt, an internationally renowned expert on superconstruction materials, commented that this work was "for the first time on a photonic chip, with simple experiments, some of the ideas described by Einstein's general theory of relativity were accurately and beautifully represented." The results were published in 2013 in the Nature Photonics International Journal of Optics; in 2014, they were named recommendations by the American Society of Physics and were awarded “China's Important Optical Achievements in 2013” ​​by China Laser Magazine. Compared with most of the previous narrow-band resonant optical microcavities, the non-resonant optical microcavities reported in the work have wide-band characteristics and can capture photons in a wider continuous waveband, which also develops a new function of the optical microcavity. Can be applied to wide-band lasers, photodetectors, and photovoltaic devices on photonic chips.

Currently, Liu Hui and his research team are working hard to integrate semiconductor luminescent materials into superconducting materials to realize a nanoscale laser with an ultra-small photonic chip. At the same time, the development of an independent photonic device integrated in the photonic chip of the complete superstructure material to achieve a complete information processing function of the superstructure material photonic chip, and he hopes to use the superstructure material photonic chip he developed for photonic computers.
