The pesticide microemulsion (ME) is a transparent or milky body formed by the active ingredient of the pesticide and the emulsifier, dispersant, antifreeze, stabilizer, and cosolvent uniformly dispersed in the matrix water.

The active ingredient of the microemulsion dispersed in water has a particle diameter of 0.01 to 0.1 m, and thus the appearance of the microemulsion is transparent or nearly transparent. The emulsifier is generally used in an amount of more than twice that of the active material, and requires a certain amount of an organic solvent and a solubilizing agent. The active material that can be processed into an aqueous emulsion can theoretically be processed into a microemulsion, but the processing concentration generally does not exceed 20%. The choice of emulsifier and solvent is critical, otherwise crystallization and phase inversion are highly prone to occur.

Microemulsions are generally more expensive than emulsifiable concentrates and emulsions (since emulsifiers and solvents are used in large amounts).
