Seamless steel tubes are manufactured by punching steel ingots or solid billets and then undergoing hot rolling, cold rolling, or cold drawing processes. These tubes are commonly specified by their outer diameter and wall thickness, measured in millimeters (e.g., OD x WT). There are two main types of seamless steel tubes: hot-rolled and cold-rolled (also known as cold-drawn).
Hot-rolled seamless steel tubes are categorized into several types, including general-purpose pipes, low- and medium-pressure boiler tubes, high-pressure boiler tubes, alloy steel tubes, stainless steel tubes, petroleum cracking tubes, geological tubes, and more. Cold-rolled or cold-drawn seamless tubes also come in similar categories, such as general-purpose, low- and medium-pressure boiler pipes, high-pressure boiler tubes, alloy and stainless steel tubes, as well as specialized options like carbon and alloy thin-walled pipes, and special-shaped steel pipes.
In terms of size, hot-rolled seamless pipes typically have an outer diameter larger than 32 mm with wall thickness ranging from 2.5 to 75 mm. Cold-rolled pipes can be as small as 6 mm in diameter, with wall thicknesses as thin as 0.25 mm. Thin-walled pipes may have diameters up to 5 mm with wall thicknesses less than 0.25 mm. Cold-rolled tubes generally offer better dimensional accuracy compared to hot-rolled ones.
Common materials used for seamless steel tubes include high-quality carbon steels such as 10, 20, 30, 35, and 45, as well as low-alloy structural steels like 16Mn and 5MnV. Other popular grades include 40Cr, 30CrMnSi, 45Mn2, and 40MnB, which are available in both hot-rolled and cold-rolled forms. Low-carbon steel tubes like 10 and 20 are often used in fluid transportation systems, while medium-carbon steels such as 45 and 40Cr are used for mechanical components in vehicles and machinery.
To ensure quality, standard seamless steel pipes undergo strength and flattening tests. Hot-rolled pipes are usually delivered in a hot-rolled or heat-treated condition, while cold-rolled pipes are typically supplied in a heat-treated state. This ensures they meet the required mechanical properties and dimensional stability for various industrial applications.
