Wallpaper moldy treatment

In recent years, home decoration has seen a growing trend toward using wallpaper. Compared to traditional latex paints, wallpapers offer more personalization, are eco-friendly, and easier to clean. However, despite these benefits, many homeowners—especially those in the south—often face the issue of moldy wallpaper after installation. This is not always due to the quality of the wallpaper itself, but rather other factors that contribute to the problem. One major cause of mold is the condition of the wall surface. In many parts of China, walls are not built with high-quality materials and are prone to moisture seepage. When using PVC wallpaper, which doesn't allow for good air circulation, and if the adhesive used is made from organic substances like glutinous rice flour, mold can easily develop. To prevent this, it's important to use a high-quality moisture-resistant base film before applying the wallpaper. Another often-overlooked reason for mold is improper installation. If the glue isn’t fully dry, or if there’s a sudden temperature change between indoors and outdoors, it can lead to bubbling and trapped moisture under the wallpaper. This creates the perfect environment for mold to grow over time. After installing new wallpaper, it’s best to keep the room closed for a few days, allowing the adhesive to dry completely. After about three days, you can gently wipe off any excess glue along the seams with a damp cloth, and then ventilate the space thoroughly. Additionally, environmental humidity plays a big role, especially during the rainy season in southern regions. Many people avoid putting up wallpaper during this time, as high humidity can increase the risk of mold. But with proper ventilation and timing, it's still possible to install wallpaper successfully. If mold does appear on your wallpaper, there are several ways to handle it. For large areas, replacing the entire wallpaper might be the most effective solution. For smaller spots, you can try cleaning with soapy water, a mild detergent, or a cloth dampened with alcohol. For more stubborn cases, bleach can be used, but make sure to wear gloves and rinse thoroughly afterward. Some people may be hesitant to use bleach due to concerns about fading, but special anti-mold treatments designed for wallpaper can also help remove mold without damaging the surface. By taking the right precautions during installation and maintaining proper care, you can enjoy beautiful, long-lasting wallpaper without the worry of mold.
