Classification of mechanical seals

Mechanical seals can be classified based on various factors, starting with their rotation or static nature. A rotating internal flow unbalanced single-end seal is known as a rotary type, while a static external flow internal balanced single-end seal is referred to as a static type.

The static ring's position relative to the sealing face determines whether it's an internal or external type. This leads to two main categories: built-in and exterior types.

Depending on the direction in which the sealing medium leaks, the seal can be either an internal loss type or an outflow type. This distinction plays a crucial role in determining the system's efficiency and safety.

Another classification is based on how the fluid pressure affects the sealing faces. Seals can be either balanced or unbalanced, depending on whether they counteract the pressure on the end face.

The number of sealing faces also defines the type of seal. Single-end and double-end seals are common classifications, with the latter offering enhanced performance in high-pressure environments.

When it comes to the number of springs used, mechanical seals can be divided into single-spring and multi-spring types. Multi-spring designs often provide better load distribution and stability.

Seals can also be categorized by the type of elastic element they use. Spring compression and bellows are two primary types, each with unique advantages in different applications.

In addition to these, non-contact mechanical seals include hydrostatic, fluid dynamic pressure, and dry gas seals, each designed for specific operating conditions and environments.

Temperature is another important factor in classification. Seals can be designed for high, medium, normal, or low-temperature applications, ensuring optimal performance under varying thermal conditions.

Finally, based on the pressure within the sealed chamber, mechanical seals are classified as ultra-high, high, medium, or low-pressure types. This ensures that the right seal is selected for the specific operational requirements.
