In early 2020, EJP's Team PPF collaborated with Woodard & Curran, an environmental consulting firm, to tackle a challenging wastewater treatment issue at a shopping center in Hingham, Massachusetts. This particular system served The Derby Street Shops, which are managed by a national retail property management company.
After conducting a comprehensive evaluation, the project team from Woodard & Curran devised a strategy to address problems related to the sanitary manhole structures at the mall. These issues included severe corrosion of the manhole structures, odors emanating from hydrogen sulfide gases, and water seeping into the manhole inlet and outlet pipe connections.
The task for Team PPF was to implement a series of treatments tailored to resolve each of these problems. It was crucial not only to repair the existing corrosion but also to ensure the manholes were protected against future deterioration. The unpleasant odor needed to be eliminated, and the excessive groundwater infiltration had to be stopped. Additionally, the project needed to be finished within budget and minimize disruptions to the shopping center's operations.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many stores temporarily closed, the project moved forward faster than usual. All three manhole structures were successfully restored and upgraded.
The initial step involved reconstructing the manholes. The concrete structures had deteriorated significantly due to exposure to road salt. Once the structural repairs were completed, the leaks causing stormwater infiltration were sealed using a specialized moisture-activated grout. This grout, designed specifically for concrete, can absorb up to 12 times its weight in water and forms a durable, impermeable gel with strong adhesive properties.
Following these repairs, the next focus was on preventing future corrosion. Team PPF applied an epoxy coating system to the manholes, which is engineered to offer up to 75 years of protection in highly corrosive sewer environments. These coatings are designed to combat corrosion, microbial attacks, abrasion, and sewer gases.
Once the manholes were structurally sound, sealed, and coated, the final step was to address water infiltration from the surrounding paved areas. Atop each structure, water inflow dishes were installed to intercept unwanted water before it could enter through the manhole cover. These dishes are commonly used to reduce stormwater entry into the wastewater system.
When considering any project, Team PPF always evaluates life cycle costs. Understanding the effective lifespan of a solution is essential for determining its true value. For the Derby Hill Shops, all these factors were carefully considered to ensure a sustainable and effective outcome.
