RFID tags can be traced to find intraoperative devices [full text]

Singapore's KK Women and Children's Hospital (KKH) has begun using a tag with a built-in RFID chip to track the gauze used in the procedure to ensure that no gauze remains in the body after surgery.

With this RFID system, all the instruments used in the surgery have RFID tags attached. Before sewing the wound, the RFID reader scans and finds the device to prevent medical errors.

The RFID system was developed by Singapore's O'Connor. The government has funded US$330,000 and is currently undergoing a one-month test. After the KKH hospital is successfully piloted, it will be deployed to a wider range of medical applications.
