Genetically Modified Wheat: Global Needs

Due to the characteristics of high yield, low production cost and good product quality, environment-friendly biotech crops have brought tremendous benefits to farmers throughout the world. After 12 years of promotion, today's biotech soybeans, corn, and canola have been widely adopted and have had a huge impact on the global economy. In order to obtain the same benefits, nine wheat grower groups in Australia, Canada and the United States recently issued a joint statement calling for the simultaneous launch of GM wheat in the market.

In order to eliminate the problem of Fusarium, increase the drought and heat resistance of crops, and change the starch content in foods to reduce the occurrence of intestinal diseases, diabetes and obesity, several transgenic wheat lines have been developed. Although real commercialization takes about 6 to 10 years, its realization will certainly have a significant impact on reducing hunger and poverty.
